The Arena - Politico's daily debate with policymakers and opinion shapers Politico.com: "The economy is the big issue of this election. Hey, the Bush-McCain economy just lost $700 billion in retirement plans.
It's another reason why we need active and competent regulations for Wall Street. None of this matters for people like McCain who own 12 houses, but normal Americans are trying to rely on retirement plans when they grow old.
With McCain's proposed cutbacks to Social Security, our retirement programs are even more important. It also brings us back to McCain's radical plan to send our Social Security money to Wall Street. Yes, the same Wall Street who just lost $700 billion yesterday. Imagine the consequences of an unchecked market controlling our Social Security money"

The Writers' Cafe
The Writers' Cafe: "A shades triple pot round got to be really big, and the enrgy level increased as well. When kids who were down on their luck (if they were not down on their luck they would be out there flipping like everyone else) saw such games taking place they sometimes offer “luck” to the guy they thought might have have a better chance of winning the pot. They gave luck according to the following procedure. They would gently circle their hands over the top one of the players’ head (I can not recall if they would ever actually touch the players head, or just cirle above, alternatively they may have been rubbing the players back). The one thing I am quite certain of was the incantation that went along with this procedure was the luck giver would chant “wish I had a watermelon, wish I had a watermelon” no less then three times in a row"

This article is about a dietary medical therapy. For information on ketogenic low-carbohydrate diets as a lifestyle choice or for weight loss, see Low-carbohydrate diet.
The ratio of calorific contributions from food components of four dietsThe ketogenic diet is a high fat, adequate protein, low carbohydrate diet, primarily used to treat difficult-to-control (refractory) epilepsy in children. The diet mimics aspects of starvation by forcing the body to burn fat rather than carbohydrate. Normally, the carbohydrates in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is particularly important in fuelling the brain. However, if there is very little carbohydrate in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. When the body produces ketone bodies, a state known as ketosis, this has an anticonvulsant effect.[1]
The diet has just enough protein for body growth and repair, and sufficient calories to maintain the correct weight for age and height. The 'classic' ketogenic diet contains a 4:1 ratio by weight of fat to combined protein and carbohydrate. This is achieved by eliminating foods high in carbohydrates (starchy fruits and vegetables, bread, pasta, grains and sugar) while increasing the consumption of foods high in fat (cream and butter).[1]"

An Essential Life Story - Nishmat
An Essential Life Story - Nishmat: "...shocked but I figured, I had come half way around the world to learn Torah, and if that is what it meant to learn Torah, I had better start using the dictionary. At the time, I knew nothing about shoreshim or different grammatical constructions in Hebrew.
'Try it with a hey,' the tutor would say. Or 'try it with a nun!.
I would look up each and every word not understanding why I needed a hey when there was clearly no hey in the word.
Then, after several days we were asked to learn a Rashi.Again my head was raised, this time a little bit less timidly.
'Excuse me, but I can read print and I can read script, but this is not Hebrew.'
'Oh,' the tutor informed me, 'here is a piece of paper. On this paper you will find the Hebrew alphabet and you will find Rashi script. You can tell the differences..."

We can imagine that Nina represents the masses. Flocking towards what they feel is good because it is what all the other people like. Aha, yes...hence the title of the play, The Seagull. Would Anton Chekhov the soulful writer be satisfied with only that ? To be viewed as an accomplished writer only because others said and thought he was good.
I for one, say no. This very concept must be what the entire play was about.
The flock-like behaviour of the people, the masses, Nina-
to Konstantin Act Two
" you keep saying things somehow crosswise"
in symbols or something-
I mean, look at this this seagull, a symbol if I ever saw one,
but of what, I'm sorry, I've no idea.
I'm not clever enough to make it out. "
(Tom Stoppard, Nina, pg. 30)
Was Chekhov writing his plays to be adored, by the masses ?

Writing on the Web.
I managed to restore my first Web Site circa August/September 2001.: "Aharon Moshe's Notebook
The notable occasion being when he caressed the proscenium and stated 'this stage...' and started laughing to himself ! Where was he in the script, I didn't know (still don't) did he ? I seem to recall his earlier flubbed line was that the Elm tree (pg8) looked dark because it 'was dead', the line delivered in a deadpan fashion, kind of mocking his beloved Nina at the same time losing his character of Konstantin the illusionist, to Konstantin the sarcastic. In my opinion this was when last night's live performance of The Seagull, started slipping from being a cold dark 'realism' highbrow type play, to perhaps a sardonic tragic comedy, that could appeal to the masses.

Windows Update SNAFU ~ Windows Fanatics
Windows Update SNAFU ~ Windows Fanatics: "Am I the only one to have this problem with these updates, or is it more widespread, and to what extent? What are the common factors, if any?
Most important, when will this be fixed, and will somebody please tell me so I can turn Automatic Updates back on? And how will Microsoft get the amended updates to those who cannot figure out how to get back on the Net? By telephone or by snail mail?
Can you swing some extra clout at MS? Or at least tell me where to direct my displeasure?
PS Tonight I got a phone call from my cousin, who has DSL from Bellsouth. She was also unable to access the Net after Update Tuesday."

The Blog Economy - R21
The Blog Economy - R21: "Millions of people are using blogs to augment ... well, whatever it is that they do. From pundit blogs that we know so well in the political and tech space, to the flood of food and entertainment blogs, to expert blogs written by designers, marketers, lawyers, scientists, economists, and the like to the SMB blogs written by boutique wineries, photographers, craftsmen of all kinds, and businesses in countless industries. Some of these blogs are used simply to get attention to a small business of professional service. Some are used to directly drive ecommerce, and everything in between.
The biggest story, however, may be how blogs continue to transform media.
From experiment to strategy"

I spoke to a few people from the oil industry and they are convinced about the inevitability of a ‘carbon cost’ in the next five to ten years and they are already working that cost into their business models and investment decisions. If we really want a big push towards clean energy we must create incentives to migrate to non-carbon technologies.
I believe Information Technology can evolve sustainable models of development as energy efficiency is intimately related to technology. IT can help design smart grid solutions for utilities. With thoughtful engineering we can help design green buildings that harvest sunlight."

Back to 14 years ago today...
The thing that happened 14 years ago today was my hearing a very special explanation of Parsha Beha'aloscha for a very special occassion. The Rabbi of the shul in Los Angeles California was giving a very deep explanation as to the meaning of the inverted or what he called falling nuns.
According to Chassidish tradition the speech given by the Rabbi about the Parsha which was about to be read from the Torah scroll was given before the reading of the Torah as opposed to after the Torah reading.
I had been searching the audience to see if my grandfather had made it to the shul, however I felt that I should not take my concentraction away from the Rabbi because his explanation seemed to be inspired, and I wanted to catch all of its nuances.
The time of the year was Tammuz 8 5754. It had just been my secular birthday the day before, I was going to be called to the Torah for the first time!

There are many reasons that I choose to write. One reason is that I feel it is my duty, on another level I feel the need to express my thoughts. Perhaps most important for me personally is that writing helps me understand things better.

14 Years Ago Today
I had been working on completing a thorough explanation of the current Parsha, Balak, only to get caught up in explaining a Parsha that occurred five weeks prior. (See http://thewriterscafe.org )
So I had begun to wonder, why I am getting so stuck in this one Parsha Beha'aloscha, when I had only really intendended it to be some sort of introduction to the current Parsha of Balak which it seems I never really got a chance to delve into.
